The researchers trained domestic violence advocates in Mississippi to discuss HIV prevention and PrEP with survivors. They wanted to learn whether the training was acceptable and whether advocates’ knowledge, confidence, and willingness to provide information improved.

Plain Language Abstract

Survivors of intimate partner violence may face elevated HIV risk, and domestic violence agencies could connect them with prevention services. However, advocates may lack training about pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP. Researchers delivered a nonrandomized, two-session group intervention to 25 domestic violence advocates in Mississippi. Surveys were completed before training, immediately afterward, and three months later. Compared with baseline, advocates reported higher intervention acceptability, greater PrEP knowledge, and greater confidence in providing HIV-prevention information, explaining eligibility, supporting clients already using PrEP, and beginning PrEP counseling. Improvements were reported both immediately and at three months. The study suggests that a brief educational program can be feasible and acceptable and can strengthen advocates’ self-reported readiness to discuss prevention. Because there was no randomized comparison group and the sample was small, changes cannot be attributed definitively to the intervention. The study also did not measure whether advocates had more conversations, whether survivors accessed PrEP, or whether HIV outcomes changed.
