The researchers interviewed staff at a southern HIV clinic to learn what within the clinic and its wider environment could help or hinder the introduction of trauma-informed care.

Plain Language Abstract

Trauma is common among people with HIV and can affect physical health, mental health, and engagement in care. Before implementing trauma-informed care, researchers interviewed 23 providers, staff members, and administrators at a large urban HIV clinic in the southern United States. Using an implementation framework, they examined influences inside the clinic and in its external environment. Participants saw trauma-informed care as a high priority and generally compatible with the clinic’s work. However, they identified gaps in available resources, staff training and access to information, internal communication and networks, connections with outside organizations, and the clinic’s ability to respond to patients’ needs and resources. These findings represent staff perceptions during pre-implementation and do not show how patients would experience the model or whether it would improve outcomes. The study did not implement trauma-informed care. The authors concluded that the assessment identifies specific areas for system strengthening and implementation strategies that could support future adoption in HIV primary care.
